The Device is a general-purpose interface board (GPIB) controller used for establishing a communication link from your workstation or computer to GPIB-supported programmable instruments. With thousands of programmable instruments available supporting the GPIB standard, it has never been easier to communicate with these instruments. The 778686-01 comes bundled with the NI-488.2 driver software for Linux. This will provide you with a targeted solution for use in test and measurement environments based upon Linux operating systems. By utilizing the PCI Bus, the National Instruments 778686-01 offers a reliable and efficient method of connecting your workstation/computer to GPIB instrumentation.
For those that require a high-throughput GPIB interface controller for their automated testing applications, the 778686-01 will meet or exceed your demands. Using the IEEE 488.1 three-wire handshake, the NI part has been tested at speeds greater than 1.5 Mb/s; while using the HS488 high-speed protocol, it has been benchmarked at speeds greater than 7.7 Mb/s. In order to eliminate potential host processor bottlenecks associated with GPIB interface controllers that are dependent upon interrupting the host processor to move data, the 778686-01 contains an onboard Bus Master DMA controller, which handles the transfer of data directly. This reduces the number of times the microprocessor is interrupted and increases productivity when moving large amounts of data for the GPIB Instrument Control Device in automated test systems. Due to its ability to accelerate data transfer by managing data movement through hardware rather than relying solely on microprocessor interrupts, the part is a preferred choice among many engineers and scientists who require both rapid data acquisition and precise instrument control.
As part of National Instruments' advanced ASIC technology, the part will provide maximum performance and be compliant with the IEEE 488.2 specification. The hardware contained within the 778686-01 is fully configurable via software and meets all plug-and-play specifications for easy installation.
