National Instruments 778641-10 MXI-4 Interface Kit
The NI 778641-10 (PXI-PCI8336) is a 10-meter isolated optical fiber designed to provide MXI-4 remote control connections between a host computer and PXI chassis. The NI 778641-10 provides the physical interconnection required to connect a PCI-8336 interface board located in a desktop computer/server to a PXI-8336 module in slot 1 of a PXI chassis. This module is specifically designed for use with fiber optic MXI-4 configurations, providing galvanic isolation between the controlling PC and the PXI measurement instrumentation. It shields sensitive instrumentation from ground loop noise, electrical noise, and voltage transients that can degrade signal quality or damage measurement instruments used in rigorous testing and measuring environments.
Because the light-based signals are transmitted through the optical fibers instead of traditional copper wiring, longer distances can be achieved without degrading the bandwidth or low-latency characteristics associated with MXI-4. In addition, by positioning the PXI chassis at an extended distance from the host controller, engineers have greater flexibility when designing industrial automation solutions by using multiple PXI chassis (star or daisy-chained). Regardless of how far apart the chassis and controller are placed, the 778641-10 maintains the transparency inherent to MXI-4. Therefore, all modules in the connected chassis continue to register with their respective driver and application programs just as they would if they were physically located on the internal PCI bus of the host computer.
Typical examples of using a separate chassis include moving the instrument away from sources of electrical interference generated by computers in laboratories, production test floor locations, or control room areas. Similarly, facilities that require placement of instrumentation far away from operator workstations also benefit from this design. Additionally, when paired with compatible PCI-8336/PXI-8336 modules, the NI 778641-10 enables users to develop highly scalable, high-throughput PXI architectures to support various types of measurement activities, including data acquisition, instrumentation control, and synchronous multi-chassis measurements within industrial and laboratory automation applications.
