National Instruments 778953-02 Digital Waveform Generator/Analyzer
The National Instruments 778953-02 (PXI-6542) is a 32-channel PXI digital waveform generator and analyzer designed for high-speed digital testing and interfacing. It supports clock rates up to 100 MHz, with each of its 32 channels configurable independently as an input or output. This makes it suitable for testing digital ICs and other devices that require flexible, high-density digital I/O.
The module provides 8 Mbit of SDRAM per channel for storing digital waveforms and captured data. This onboard memory allows the 778953-02 to generate patterns and capture responses without requiring continuous data transfers between the module and the host controller. It supports 1.8 V, 2.5 V, 3.3 V, and 5 V TTL logic levels, providing compatibility with a wide range of digital devices. The module is supplied with a cable and connector block for connecting to a device under test (DUT).
For applications that require precise timing between digital signals, the 778953-02 supports internal or external sample clock sources, clock frequency selection, and programmable data delays. It provides ±600 ps channel-to-channel skew and data delay resolution of 1/256 of the clock period, allowing engineers to control the timing relationship between signals with high precision.
The PXI-6542 uses National Instruments' Synchronization and Memory Core (SMC) architecture and can be combined with other SMC-based instruments to build mixed-signal test systems. Multiple PXI-6542 modules can also be synchronized when additional channels or coordinated timing are required.
The module is supported by the NI-HSDIO driver and can be used with National Instruments software for creating and managing digital test patterns. The Digital Waveform Editor can be used to import, edit, and generate waveforms from sources such as spreadsheets and VHDL before incorporating them into automated test applications.
With its 32 bidirectional channels, 100 MHz maximum clock rate, onboard memory, multiple logic-level options, and precise timing control, the 778953-02 is well suited to functional testing and validation of high-density digital circuits and other electronic devices.
