National Instruments 778782-02 CAN Interface Board
The National Instruments 778782-02 (Model Name PCI-CAN-XS2) is a CAN interface board designed to be mounted into a PC. This is because it has two CAN ports, which are selectable via software using either high-speed (up to 1 Mbit/s) TJA1041 or fault-tolerant TJA1054A transceivers, or alternatively a single-wire AU5790 transceiver. Using these two independent CAN ports in conjunction with one another enables the user to communicate simultaneously over two different CAN physical layers at speeds of up to 1 Mbit/s. Included in the 778782-02 packaging is the board itself, the NI-CAN software drivers, and an RTSI cable used to connect multiple boards together for synchronization purposes. Additionally, this product is compatible with LabVIEW Real-Time to enable real-time deterministic control of embedded systems. Moreover, the NI-CAN driver provides several additional capabilities, including importing Vector .dbc files and providing a higher-level API to allow for the development of CAN programs.
When performing higher levels of testing, the 778782-02 provides the ability to use the RTSI bus to synchronize the CAN bus data with other PCI-based measurement equipment, including DAQ, vision, motion control, etc. This provides a very low-latency method of passing hardware-timed triggers between boards, allowing for tight correlation between CAN bus frames and analog signals regardless of what is occurring in the operating system. This built-in synchronization capability will make the 778782-02 a good candidate for HIL simulations and RCP environments requiring a specific alignment between network events and sensor readings.
The 778782-02 uses an onboard Intel 386EX processor to perform all of the CAN protocol functions independently of the host CPU's processing capabilities. Therefore, it does not lose data when the OS is interrupted. Additionally, the CAN Interface Board utilizes an onboard Philips SJA1000 CAN controller that combines with 500V optical isolation to meet ISO 11898 physical layer standards while also being able to handle harsh automotive electrical noise. There are two DB9 male connectors to allow connection to a CAN bus. Common applications for the 778782-02 include validating ECUs, diagnosing issues with a vehicle's CAN bus, performing HIL testing, and automating various industrial processes. In conjunction with LabVIEW Real Time, the user may transfer applications down to an RT target for determinate low jitter control and fast data logging, thus providing the CAN Interface Board as a versatile tool for both laboratory testing and production testing systems.
