National Instruments 778539-03 Digital Waveform Generator/Analyzers
The National Instruments 778539-03 (PXI-6552) is a 100 MHz digital waveform generator and analyzer module capable of delivering 20 bidirectional channels with 64 MB of on-board memory per channel. The module contains enough memory to store large amounts of pattern information, as well as run programmed sequences through linkage, loops, and branch operations. In addition to this capability, it also allows users to perform autonomous stimulus/response tests on their digital devices without requiring continuous operation of a PC. The ability to control each channel’s direction on a cycle-by-cycle basis means users can completely model bidirectional data buses for complete characterization/validation of their digital devices in a PXI chassis.
Each channel on the 778539-03 can produce a signal level in ten millivolt steps from -2.0 volts to +5.5 volts, allowing engineers to stress their digital devices in many ways, such as under various logic rules and under differing supply conditions. An onboard comparator will detect mismatched states in real-time. Each channel on the module also includes a per-cycle tristate state, allowing users to perform bus release simulation. The onboard timing engine also includes a programmable data delay, allowing users to add delay values in order to allow for the required setup and hold times associated with their particular application. Additionally, there is an external clock input available via the front panel SMB connector that can accept clocks up to 100 MHz and route them to other instrumentation in the system. When generating waveforms at frequencies greater than 50 MHz, the voltage limits for the outputs automatically restrict to +/-1.85 V while remaining at 10 mV resolution. The DC accuracy stays at +/-20 mV.
Users create their waveforms in the NI Digital Waveform Editor and then load those waveforms onto the 778539-03. To maintain signal quality at the DUT (device under test), the part's outputs have a characteristic impedance of 50 ohms and a current drive of ±50 milliamps per channel. Additionally, two functions are featured (sample clock output & programmable function interface lines), which enable flexible timing requirements for overall system configuration. Several of the 778539-03 modules may be synchronized together using SMC synchronization to increase the number of channels used in applications ranging from low-channel-count bench-top characterization applications to fully automated high-channel-count production validation applications for application-specific integrated circuits (ASIC's), field-programmable gate arrays (FPGA's), and memory interfaces that require significant pattern storage and rapid edge placement.
