National Instruments 778657-01 Gigabit Ethernet Interface Module
The NI 778657-01 is a one-slot PXI-8231 Gigabit Ethernet interface module that adds an additional 1000 Mb/s network connection to PXI & CompactPCI systems for industrial automation and test. This module uses the Intel 82540EM controller. The NI 778657-01 will automatically negotiate and set the duplex setting (half/full) of the link based on what it detects on the cable at the time of the connect. It will also detect whether a crossover cable has been used, so no user intervention is required. This allows users to deploy across different vendors and legacy networks by simply plugging into whatever they have available.
The 778657-01 transfers data over the PXI bus at speeds that reflect real-world conditions versus the maximum possible data transfer rate (theoretical line rate) of the bus. Because the 1000 Mb/s is close to the upper end of what is achievable by the shared PCI bus, most users can expect the data to be transferred at about 500 Mb/s transmit and 800 Mb/s receive, representing a five to eight times increase in data transfer rate when compared to a 100 Mb/s Fast Ethernet connection. There are factors including but not limited to host CPU utilization, other PCI devices accessing the bus, and switch fabric delay that determine the actual sustained data transfer rate. Therefore, the 778657-01 has been developed to provide a deterministic stream of data, distributed data acquisition, or high channel count logging that would otherwise shorten test time if the speed of the network were increased.
Users who have integrated this Gigabit Ethernet Interface Module into their test systems can still utilize their existing Category 5 structured cabling as long as there are terminations on all four conductor pairs, so they do not have to upgrade any portion of their current infrastructure in order to take advantage of full Gigabit performance. In addition, the 778657-01 module does not affect or disrupt the operation of prior investments in controllers, switches, and cabling due to its backward-compatible nature of supporting older Ethernet standards. Lastly, since this module has a single slot footprint in a PXI chassis, users can continue to install additional measurement and switching modules. Some examples of typical applications for the 778657-01 include real-time control via Ethernet, remote control of instruments via VXI-11 or raw sockets, and combining data from multiple PXI chassis within a manufacturing test cell or distributed monitoring system. Since these applications require consistent data transfer rates and standard drivers, the part greatly simplifies system integration.
