Keysight 34901A General Purpose Multiplexer
The Keysight 34901A is a 20-channel general-purpose multiplexer module for the 34970A and 34972A data acquisition/switch units. The module is used for flexible signal routing within automated test and measurement systems for a broad range of applications from industrial automation to laboratory research. The module offers 20 basic channels and two fused current inputs, offering 22-channel connectivity for mixed types of signals. The 34901A offers two- and four-wire scan configurations, enabling simultaneous integration of resistance temperature detectors (RTDs), thermistors, thermocouples, voltage, current, and frequency measurements in a single setup.
One of the best aspects of the Keysight 34901A is that it has an internal thermocouple reference junction, which frees users from having to employ external temperature-measurement compensation hardware when working with thermocouples. The module switches 60 channels per second, which is a fair speed-to-flexibility compromise for most-throughput applications. It switches voltages up to 300 V, so it's just as happy working with low-voltage sensor outputs or switching industrial-level, higher-voltage inputs. Fused inputs on channels 21 and 22 provide up to 1 A of AC or DC current to facilitate current direct measurement with no shunt resistors needed. This implementation makes power monitoring and load test system design a lot easier.
The 34901A employs break-before-make scanning to close only one channel pair at a time during scanning to prevent signal shorting or crosstalk. In non-scanning operation, several channels can be closed simultaneously to enable flexible static test connections. Internal digital multimeter support in the 34970A/34972A allows for seamless integration of switching and measurement capabilities for simplified data acquisition.
This multiplexer is applied to use by engineers in the areas of environmental monitoring, production test, and multi-sensor data logging. The module supports two- and four-wire connection mixing on a single module, allowing for the simplification of hardware complexity in multiple measurement type systems. The module includes bank switching to support groups of channels, thereby providing scalability in large systems. Designed to be rugged and in compliance with industrial specifications, the 34901A provides high-reliability signal routing in hostile environments, with accuracy in temperature, voltage, current, and resistance measurements.
