National Instruments cRIO Products at Apex Waves

National Instruments CompactRIO, commonly called cRIO, is a rugged embedded platform for measurement, monitoring, and control. Its architecture combines a real-time processor, a reconfigurable field-programmable gate array (FPGA), and interchangeable C Series I/O modules. This combination lets engineers acquire sensor data, execute control algorithms, and respond to changing conditions within one system. Applications range from equipment condition monitoring and industrial automation to distributed data logging and research test stands. Once a compatible application is deployed, the controller can operate independently of a development computer. Ethernet connectivity supports remote supervision and data exchange, while local processing reduces dependence on continuous host communication.

The CompactRIO family includes separate controllers and chassis as well as integrated systems. The cRIO-902x series includes the cRIO-9024, part number 781174-01, which requires a compatible chassis because it has no built-in C Series slots. The cRIO-911x chassis series includes the eight-slot cRIO-9118 with a Virtex-5 LX110 FPGA. Integrated legacy models, such as the eight-slot cRIO-9074 in the cRIO-907x series, combine processing, FPGA resources, and module slots in one unit.

The cRIO-904x and cRIO-905x series offer NI Linux Real-Time, NI-DAQmx access, programmable FPGA resources, and Time Sensitive Networking capabilities for distributed synchronization. Representative options include the eight-slot cRIO-9045, part number 785623-01, with a 1.30 GHz dual-core processor and Kintex-7 70T FPGA, and the four-slot cRIO-9054, part number 786425-01, with a 1.33 GHz dual-core processor and Artix-7 100T FPGA. These differences affect available expansion, processing resources, and application suitability.

C Series modules determine the signals a CompactRIO system can measure or generate. Examples include the NI-9205 for voltage measurements, NI-9213 for thermocouple inputs, and NI-9234 for sound and vibration acquisition. Selecting modules by sensor type, channel count, sampling requirements, isolation, and connector style helps build a system around the application rather than adapting every signal to one fixed interface. Module compatibility must also be checked against the controller, chassis, driver version, and programming mode.

Software selection matters as much as hardware selection. LabVIEW Real-Time supports applications on compatible real-time targets, while LabVIEW FPGA enables custom hardware logic, timing, and signal processing. Supported Scan Mode or NI-DAQmx configurations can simplify I/O access without requiring custom FPGA programming. NI-DAQmx support is not universal across older CompactRIO generations, and installed systems may require specific historical software versions.

For replacement projects, compare the complete configuration before changing a controller or chassis. Review the operating system, FPGA target, power supply, network interfaces, environmental limits, and existing application dependencies. A newer model is not automatically a drop-in substitute. Apex Waves helps customers source CompactRIO controllers, chassis, and associated modules for maintaining established systems. Share the model number, NI part number, and required configuration when requesting availability, repair options, or a replacement quote.

Frequently Asked Questions

CompactRIO is used for embedded measurement, monitoring, and control. It combines processor-based application logic with FPGA resources and C Series I/O, making it suitable for equipment condition monitoring, industrial automation, distributed data logging, and research test systems. A deployed application can run on the controller without a development computer remaining connected.

No. Modular controllers such as the cRIO-9024 require a compatible external CompactRIO chassis to accommodate C Series modules. Integrated controllers such as the cRIO-9074, cRIO-9045, and cRIO-9054 already include module slots and FPGA resources. Check the exact controller configuration before ordering a chassis or replacement assembly.

No. The cRIO-904x and cRIO-905x series support NI-DAQmx for compatible C Series modules. Earlier CompactRIO generations do not gain NI-DAQmx support simply by installing a newer driver. Their I/O access depends on the supported FPGA or Scan Mode configuration. Verify the controller, module, programming mode, and software versions together.

No. Physical fit does not guarantee functional compatibility. Support depends on the module, controller or chassis, driver version, and selected programming mode. The NI-9205, NI-9213, and NI-9234 illustrate different measurement options, but each proposed configuration should be checked against NI's compatibility information. Connector variants, isolation requirements, and sensor wiring also need consideration.

LabVIEW development typically requires compatible versions of LabVIEW, the LabVIEW Real-Time Module, and NI CompactRIO Device Drivers; older installations may use NI-RIO. The LabVIEW FPGA Module is used to develop custom FPGA logic. Supported Scan Mode or NI-DAQmx workflows can avoid custom FPGA development. Match the software to the controller's operating system, hardware generation, and chosen I/O mode.

Record the controller model and NI part number, chassis model, installed C Series modules, operating system, firmware, and software versions. Compare power, connectivity, environmental ratings, slot count, and FPGA resources. A different controller may require application migration, FPGA recompilation, and validation rather than a direct swap. Provide the existing configuration to Apex Waves when requesting a replacement or repair quote.
