National Instruments SCXI Products at Apex Waves

National Instruments SCXI, short for Signal Conditioning eXtensions for Instrumentation, is a modular hardware family for preparing sensor signals, expanding measurement channel counts, and routing signals in automated test systems. Rather than treating every sensor as a direct voltage input, SCXI provides application-specific amplification, filtering, isolation, and excitation. This approach supports temperature monitoring, structural testing, process measurements, and other applications where signal quality matters as much as the acquisition hardware.

An SCXI system combines a powered chassis, measurement or switching modules, appropriate terminal blocks, and a compatible acquisition or control interface. The SCXI-1000 provides four module slots, while the SCXI-1001 provides twelve. These chassis distribute power and support signal routing through the SCXI backplane. Their modular layout allows different conditioning functions to share an enclosure, helping engineers organize mixed-sensor installations without assigning a separate external instrument to every measurement.

Temperature and low-level voltage applications are represented by the SCXI-1102 family. The SCXI-1102, part number 776572-02, provides 32 differential input channels with 2 Hz filtering. The SCXI-1102B, part number 776572-02B, uses 200 Hz filters, while the SCXI-1102C, part number 776572-02C, provides 10 kHz filtering. These differences matter when choosing between noise rejection and response to changing signals; similar model names do not make the variants interchangeable for every application.

Other SCXI modules address different measurement requirements. The eight-channel SCXI-1125 provides isolated inputs, programmable gain, and selectable filtering. The eight-channel SCXI-1520 supports quarter-, half-, and full-bridge strain measurements with programmable voltage excitation; it requires an SCXI-1314 or SCXI-1314T terminal block. For output applications, the six-channel SCXI-1124, part number 776572-24, generates isolated low-bandwidth voltage or current signals. Switching products such as the SCXI-1169 extend the family into relay-based signal routing.

Many SCXI analog input modules condition and multiplex signals for digitization by a separate compatible DAQ device. Selected NI E Series and M Series devices can serve this role, depending on the hardware configuration and driver. The SCXI-1600 provides another approach by combining USB connectivity with acquisition and control inside the SCXI chassis. Overall sampling performance depends on the module, gain, settling time, channel count, and digitizer rather than chassis size alone. Multiplexed acquisition shares conversion throughput across active channels, so an aggregate sampling specification does not mean each channel operates at that same rate during a scan.

For existing installations, replacement planning should consider the complete signal path, not just the module label. Check terminal blocks, cables, excitation requirements, software versions, and calibration needs. NI-DAQmx 19.0 is the last release supporting legacy SCXI hardware; support was removed in version 19.1. Apex Waves helps customers source legacy SCXI hardware for maintaining established systems, replacing failed components, and planning compatible spares. Confirm the exact model and part number before ordering.

Key Features

  • Modular platform for sensor conditioning, channel expansion, analog output, and switching.
  • SCXI-1000 and SCXI-1001 chassis provide four and twelve module slots, respectively.
  • SCXI-1102 variants offer different filter bandwidths for temperature and voltage measurements.
  • SCXI-1125 and SCXI-1520 support isolated input and strain measurement applications.
  • Match modules, terminal blocks, DAQ interfaces, and legacy software before replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

SCXI stands for Signal Conditioning eXtensions for Instrumentation. It is NI's modular signal-conditioning and switching family. Depending on the installed modules, an SCXI system can amplify, filter, isolate, excite, or route sensor signals before measurement. The family includes chassis, input and output modules, switching hardware, terminal blocks, and interface accessories.

A typical system needs an SCXI chassis, suitable conditioning modules, matching terminal blocks, cables or adapters, and a compatible DAQ device or acquisition interface. The SCXI-1000 has four module slots, and the SCXI-1001 has twelve. Many analog input modules need a separate digitizer; the SCXI-1600 instead provides USB acquisition and control within the chassis.

All three provide 32 differential analog input channels, but their filter cutoff frequencies differ: 2 Hz for the SCXI-1102, 200 Hz for the SCXI-1102B, and 10 kHz for the SCXI-1102C. Their respective part numbers are 776572-02, 776572-02B, and 776572-02C. Select the variant according to required signal bandwidth and noise rejection; filter cutoff is not the same as sampling rate.

The SCXI-1520 provides eight strain/bridge input channels and supports quarter-, half-, and full-bridge configurations with an SCXI-1314 or SCXI-1314T terminal block. The SCXI-1125 provides eight isolated analog input channels with programmable gain and selectable filtering. The SCXI-1124 provides six isolated low-bandwidth voltage or current outputs. Choose the module and accessories for the specific sensor or control requirement.

NI-DAQmx 19.0 is the final release supporting legacy SCXI hardware; version 19.1 and later removed that support. Earlier releases may be appropriate for particular systems. Verify the selected driver's compatibility with the DAQ device, operating system, and LabVIEW version before making changes. The SCXI-1600 is not supported on 64-bit Windows, so installing 32-bit LabVIEW alone does not resolve that limitation.

Match the complete model designation, part number, channel requirements, filter bandwidth, isolation rating, and excitation capability. Also confirm the chassis, terminal block, cabling, DAQ interface, and installed software. A similar model number is not proof of compatibility. Contact Apex Waves with the existing system configuration and required calibration or documentation so the replacement request reflects the actual application.
