PXI Products at Apex Waves

National Instruments PXI hardware brings data acquisition, signal generation, switching, and precision measurement into one modular test platform. PXI stands for PCI eXtensions for Instrumentation and combines the PCI bus with CompactPCI mechanical packaging and dedicated timing resources. Rather than requiring separate benchtop instruments for every function, a PXI system shares a chassis, controller, and software environment. This approach supports automated production testing, laboratory research, aerospace validation, and maintenance of established defense test systems.

A typical configuration includes a chassis such as the eight-slot PXI-1042Q, an embedded controller such as the PXI-8108, and application-specific peripheral modules. The chassis supplies power, cooling, and backplane connections. An embedded controller operates as the system computer, while a compatible MXI remote-control interface allows an external computer to manage the instruments. Available peripheral capacity depends on the chassis layout and controller width.

The family spans several established NI product lines. M Series devices, including the PXI-6251, combine analog acquisition, analog output, digital I/O, and counter functions. One PXI-6251 ordering number is 779117-01; connector variants make exact part-number matching important. S Series devices such as the PXI-6133 provide simultaneous sampling for applications that need multiple signals captured together rather than scanned sequentially.

Dedicated instruments extend the platform beyond general-purpose DAQ. The PXI-4071 FlexDMM provides up to 7½-digit resolution for precision electrical measurements. The two-channel PXI-5114 oscilloscope offers 125 MHz analog bandwidth, sampling up to 250 MS/s, and 8-bit resolution; ordering numbers include 779466-01, 779466-02, and 779466-03. Relay modules such as the PXI-2569 automate signal routing, helping connect instruments to different test points without repeated manual rewiring.

Synchronization is another defining feature. Conventional PXI provides a 10 MHz reference clock, an eight-line trigger bus, and star-trigger resources. These connections support coordinated measurements across compatible instruments, although the required clock routing and synchronization behavior depend on the modules and application.

Software selection should follow the installed hardware. Typical drivers include NI-DAQmx, NI-DMM, NI-SCOPE, and NI-SWITCH. LabVIEW can provide application development, while TestStand can organize automated test sequences. Confirm operating-system, driver, and development-environment compatibility before replacing a controller or updating an existing installation.

PXI and PXI Express are related but not interchangeable. PXIe modules cannot operate in conventional PXI slots. Some PXI modules can operate in designated PXI peripheral slots or compatible hybrid slots within PXIe chassis, but the module connector and chassis documentation must be checked.

Before selecting a replacement, compare channel count, measurement ranges, sampling requirements, connector pinouts, and available chassis power. Also confirm that existing terminal blocks and cables suit the exact module configuration being installed.

Apex Waves supports established PXI installations with replacement hardware, repair services, and calibration options. Matching the model, ordering number, accessories, and software requirements helps preserve validated test configurations while reducing the disruption associated with a complete platform redesign.

Frequently Asked Questions

PXI stands for PCI eXtensions for Instrumentation. It is an open modular platform that combines computer-based control with measurement, signal generation, switching, and timing hardware. Typical applications include automated manufacturing test, laboratory measurements, aerospace validation, and maintenance of long-running test systems.

A PXI system generally needs a chassis, an embedded controller or compatible remote-control interface, application-specific modules, and supporting software. An eight-slot PXI-1042Q chassis and PXI-8108 embedded controller are examples of conventional PXI hardware. Cables, terminal blocks, signal conditioning, and calibration requirements depend on the selected instruments and signals.

They can share certain PXIe chassis when the installed slot types support each module. Conventional PXI modules require an appropriate PXI slot or a hybrid slot that accepts their connector configuration. PXIe modules cannot be installed in conventional PXI slots, and PXI and PXIe embedded controllers are not interchangeable. Check both chassis and module documentation.

M Series modules such as the PXI-6251 combine analog I/O, digital I/O, and counters. S Series modules such as the PXI-6133 provide simultaneous sampling. The PXI-4071 serves precision multimeter applications, the PXI-5114 captures waveforms, and the PXI-2569 provides relay switching. Select modules by the required signal type, ranges, channel count, and timing.

Software depends on the instruments installed. Common drivers include NI-DAQmx for supported DAQ modules, NI-DMM for multimeters, NI-SCOPE for oscilloscopes, and NI-SWITCH for switch modules. PXI Platform Services supports chassis identification and trigger routing. LabVIEW and TestStand are application-development and test-management options, respectively. Verify compatible hardware, operating-system, and software versions before installation.

Provide the exact model and ordering number, plus the chassis, controller, driver version, and any required cables or terminal blocks. Models can have different connector or memory configurations, so similar names do not guarantee identical replacements. For example, PXI-5114 ordering numbers include 779466-01, 779466-02, and 779466-03. Confirm availability, condition, calibration needs, and repair options when requesting a quote.
