National Instruments 779004-01 C Series Digital Module
The National Instruments 779004-01 (model NI-9472) is a compact digital output module that includes eight channels for sourcing-type outputs to control industrial devices such as motors, actuators, and relays. This module was engineered for use in both CompactDAQ and CompactRIO systems and can be used to operate equipment at various industrial voltages due to its ability to accept input signals within the range of 6V through 30V. The 779004-01 has an update rate of 100 microseconds per channel; this fast update time allows for rapid response in automated control sequences and machine control loops. LEDs are provided onboard the module for each channel, providing immediate visual indication of the state of the output so technicians may quickly identify if there is a problem with their installation or wiring.
Designed to withstand harsh conditions typically found in manufacturing facilities, the 779004-01 provides 2,300 VRMS of transient over-voltage protection (between the output terminals and the CompactDAQ/CompactRIO system backplane) against voltage spikes created when inductive loads are switched on/off. Additionally, the part also provides 250 VRMS of channel-to-earth grounding isolation. Therefore, it provides double insulation to protect personnel working near grounded industrial machinery. The housing of the 779004-01 is closed and has a non-conformal coating. Thus, it protects internal electronics from common outdoor environmental conditions but does not provide adequate protection for use in locations subject to high levels of airborne moisture or contaminants. A major advantage of the C Series Digital Module is that it uses screw-terminals allowing users to easily connect to field devices. National Instruments suggests using wire terminal ferrules or purchasing a compatible backshell kit if the user expects significant vibrations will occur that could dislodge wires connected to the terminal.
From a power perspective, the 779004-01 is designed for continuous duty in a variety of industrial applications. Active usage draws approximately 230 milliwatts, while sleeping draws less than one-half milliwatt (approximately 0.4mW). Both values support energy conservation conscious designs for remote control panels. As previously mentioned, each channel can handle significant amounts of continuous current. These capabilities make the NI 9472 well-suited for controlling devices such as solenoids, indicator lights, contactors and small motor starter controls.
