The National Instruments 783703-01 (NI-9860) is a 2-port, high-performance vehicle multiprotocol interface module engineered for Controller Area Network (CAN) and Local Interconnect Network (LIN) communication within CompactDAQ and CompactRIO systems. Utilizing the NI-XNET driver architecture, the module features two ports that accept hardware-selectable NI-XNET transceiver cables, enabling seamless interfacing with CAN, CAN FD, and LIN bus networks at data rates up to 8 Mbit/s. External power input (V SUP to COM) accepts a 9 VDC to 30 VDC supply range, drawing up to 1.5 W maximum in active mode with an internal thermal dissipation capped at 1.2 W. Power management from the host chassis backplane is optimized at 1 W maximum during active operation, dropping to 5 mW maximum in sleep mode to suit power-sensitive in-vehicle test applications. Safety limits include a maximum continuous voltage rating of 30 VDC (Measurement Category I) between chassis ground and COM, as well as V SUP and COM.
Housed in a compact C Series enclosure weighing 144 g (5.0 oz), the NI-9860 carries a standalone IP30 ingress protection rating that increases to IP40 once power and transceiver cables are installed. Built to withstand demanding automotive and industrial environments (Pollution Degree 2), the module operates across a broad temperature range of -40 °C to 70 °C (-40 °C to 55 °C operating depending on chassis configuration) and handles relative humidity from 10% to 90% non-condensing (5% to 95% non-condensing storage). The module maintains full functionality at altitudes up to 5,000 meters and is rated for 5 g RMS random operating vibration (10 Hz to 500 Hz), ensuring reliable in-vehicle data logging and test bench communication.
