National Instruments 778755-02 Pentium 4 Embedded Controllers for PXI
National Instruments' 778755-02 (model name PXI-8186) is a 2.2 GHz Pentium 4-M central embedded controller for use in PXI and CompactPCI systems. This single-slot unit has significant amounts of I/O on-board, thereby allowing users to preserve their available chassis slots for measuring modules. The 778755-02 includes 256 MB of SDRAM which can be upgraded to 1 GB using one SO-DIMM module. A 30 GB internal hard drive is included and uses an Ultra ATA100 interface. Due to its double data rate design architecture, the memory bandwidth will typically be doubled over what would have been achieved had the normal single data rate been used for such common analysis processing tasks. As a result of integrating the Intel Extreme Graphics, there is no need to install a separate video card for graphics support. There are ten/one hundred base-TX Ethernet connections and two USB 2.0, two serial (RS232), one IEEE 1284 parallel, and two PS/2 connectors for maximum flexibility when connecting peripherals.
An integrated GPIB connection for direct access to other instruments is included in addition to an extra SMB port which allows for either triggering, output, or watchdog functionality for precise synchronisation with the PXI trigger bus. A complete operating system consisting of Windows 2000 along with NI-VISA, NI-488 and peripheral driver software is installed onto the 778755-02 to enable rapid deployment of test stations. In terms of maximising performance, the processor uses memory equally to maximise performance. Additionally, having two RS232 ports and one IEEE 1284 port ensures compatibility with most older devices, including tape drives and printers often found on test floors.
Available in both standard temperature and extended temperature configurations, the 778755-02 utilises a special ruggedised hard drive that supports reliable operation from 0°C to +55°C and supports long-term data storage from -40°C to +85°C. Therefore, it is well suited for the aerospace, defence, and industrial automation markets. Utilising a rugged one-piece design will minimise system integration complexities and eliminate all cabling required between peripheral boards. This provides a high-density platform for developing PXI-based systems. With regard to providing a solid base for acquiring and controlling data in real time within a confined chassis area, this controller offers a wide range of I/O interfaces combined with extreme thermal options.
