National Instruments 778755-011 Pentium 4 Embedded Controller for PXI
The National Instruments 778755-011 (model name PXI-8186) is a PXI or CompactPCI embedded controller that is based upon a 2.2 GHz Pentium 4-M processor. It was developed as an embedded controller that can be placed in any PXI or CompactPCI chassis and provides an entire PC environment to one embedded controller. This is advantageous because it eliminates the use of cabling that would normally connect each peripheral to the main controller in a nonembedded configuration. In addition, because so much of the functionality of the 778755-011 is integrated onto the PCB itself, there will be fewer slots left available in the chassis for other types of boards (such as DAQ, instrumentation, etc.). This makes the controller a logical choice for engineers looking for maximum flexibility and/or expansion capabilities without losing any processing capability.
The 778755-011 has several connectors, including an IEEE 1284 Parallel Port, a pair of USB 2.0 Ports, a GPIB Interface, a Keyboard/Mouse Port, two RS232 Serial Connectors, an Ethernet Network Port, and an SMB connector for the Trigger Input/Output and Watchdog Timer Functions. The video runs through the same Intel Extreme Chipset used in other PXI controllers and removes the need for a separate video card. The 778755-011 uses a single SO-DIMM slot to access 256MB of DDR-SODIMM RAM that is populated out-of-the-box; however, it may also be expanded to 512MB or 1GB, depending on the type of analysis being performed. For storage, the embedded controller may have either a standard hard drive with at least 30GB of storage space OR an extended temperature version with a minimum of 20GB of storage that may operate over wider temperature ranges (from very low temperatures to as high as 55°C).
The 778755-011 operates with the Microsoft Windows OS and includes VISA and GPIB drivers as support for all onboard peripherals. Due to the fact the embedded controller has large amounts of expandable memory and an extensive array of I/O interfaces, it is particularly suited for applications such as automated test systems, signal analysis, industrial monitoring, and modular instrumentation platforms that require compact and reliable computing in the center of their PXI measurement platform.
