National Instruments 778842-02 Pentium 4 Embedded Controller
This National Instruments 778842-02 is a Pentium 4-M embedded controller that is designed to fit directly into a PXI or Compact PCI chassis. It runs at a speed of 2.2 GHz with 512 KB of on-die cache and combines a full PC platform with a variety of modular instrumentation allowing test engineers a compact base upon which to build their own automated measurement and data acquisition systems. The controller puts the processor, memory, and peripheral interfaces all into one rugged module. With no internal daughter boards connected via cables, the 778842-02 leaves every slot in the chassis free to be used as an expansion bay for measurement and instrumentation cards. This part has a DDR SDRAM architecture and can have its capacity expanded from 256 MB to 1 GB by inserting an SO-DIMM module into the on-board socket. The high-bandwidth capabilities of the DDR SDRAM allow for rapid data acquisition and signal processing that is typical of many industrial testing environments.
Connectivity was the primary factor in determining the flexibility of the 778842-02. The addition of an onboard GPIB interface eliminates the need to use a separate slot to connect external instruments. Dual USB 2.0 ports, two RS232 serial connections, and one IEEE 1284 parallel port were added to enable printers, backup devices, and other commonly used peripherals to be connected. The inclusion of an onboard 10/100BaseTX Ethernet enables easy connection to a network. Built-in Intel Extreme Graphics provides clear video display capabilities, eliminating the need for a separate graphics card. A removable SMA connector located on this controller connects trigger and timing signals to the PXI Trigger Bus, allowing synchronization among multiple instruments operating together as part of a larger system.
Engineers working with demanding applications both in the lab and in industry often choose the 778842-02 due to its ability to run powerful automation applications while providing a large number of input/output options and being highly efficient in terms of space usage. The 778842-02 comes with Windows XP Professional or Windows 2000 already installed. In addition to these operating systems it comes with NI-VISA and NI-488 drivers for all of the onboard peripheral devices. A recovery disk is included with each unit that contains a hard drive based copy of all of the software installed on the device. If for some reason your software becomes corrupted or damaged, you will be able to restore your original configuration quickly and easily.
