National Instruments 778697-03 Arbitrary Waveform Generator
Part Number 778697-03 (model name PXI-5421) is an arbitrary waveform generator from National Instruments that provides 100 MS/s high-fidelity signal generation for use in communication, aerospace, automotive, and consumer electronic product testing. The 778697-03 utilizes a compact single-slot (3U) PXI form factor, providing high-precision signal generation at a resolution of 16 bits. In addition to its high-precision signal generation, the generator supports onboard memory configurations of up to 256 MB, allowing the engineer to generate long, non-recurring waveforms with high fidelity. Built around National Instruments' Synchronization and Memory Core architecture, the 778697-03 has combined both the waveform data and sequencing instructions for use within shared memory, eliminating bottlenecks associated with traditional generators that have separate instruction memory. The design allows flexible allocation between waveform length and sequence complexity support for both extensive signal libraries and intricate playback patterns.
A defining characteristic of the analog output stage of the 778697-03 AWG is its signal integrity. A combination of a 16-bit digital-to-analog converter (DAC) and highly refined analog circuitry provides a very good close-in spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) of 91 dBc. The SFDR provides excellent performance in terms of frequency domain testing, and the low average noise density of the device provides excellent results in terms of amplitude measurements. The interpolation feature of the DAC increases the effective sampling rate to 400 MS/s. The device also has an elliptical filter that suppresses unwanted frequency images from appearing at the output. The output impedance of the 778697-03 AWG can be set to either 50 or 75 ohms by the user. Additionally, there are features available to allow the user to adjust the attenuation level of the output signal with a high degree of precision or even bypass it altogether using a direct signal path. Using a direct signal path optimizes the passband flatness over a large portion of the frequency spectrum for applications such as intermediate frequency (IF) testing.
In addition to signal quality, the 778697-03 provides the engineer with advanced triggering, sequencing, and synchronization features that provide the basis for multichannel test systems. There are four different types of triggers supported by the arbitrary waveform generator, along with several features related to waveform looping and linking. Combined, these trigger modes, looping, and linking features enable engineers to build complex stimulus signals that will be phase-coherent. Engineers may use digital pattern output via LVDS signaling to extend functionality for mixed-signal test environments.
