National Instruments 780419-02 I/Q Signal Generator
The National Instruments 780419-02 is a PXIe-5450 two-channel arbitrary waveform generator designed for generating complex I/Q communications signals. It features 512 MB of onboard memory, a maximum sample rate of 400 MS/s per channel, and up to 145 MHz of analog bandwidth. These capabilities allow the module to generate wideband RF signals at frequencies above 290 MHz. The differential outputs have a 100 Ω impedance and support output levels up to 1.0 Vpk-pk, with 0–3 dB of output attenuation.
The module includes onboard signal processing functions such as pulse-shaping filters, digital gain, and a numerically controlled oscillator (NCO) for frequency shifting. These features allow I/Q waveforms to be generated and modified directly on the instrument without requiring additional external signal-processing hardware.
The NI 780419-02 is primarily used for testing devices with I/Q inputs and as the baseband section of an RF vector signal generator. Typical applications include prototype development, semiconductor testing and validation, and the development and testing of communications, radar, and electronic warfare systems. The 512 MB of onboard memory allows the module to store and generate long, complex waveforms directly from the instrument. Its signal quality is supported by an SNR greater than 66 dB, a close-in spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) of 98 dB, and low phase noise, making it suitable for high-fidelity baseband I/Q testing.
The NI 780419-02 integrates into PXI Express systems and supports several clocking and synchronization methods, including its internal clock, external clock sources, and PLL synchronization to an external clock or the PXI backplane. TClk synchronization provides phase-coherent operation across multiple channels, which is useful for applications such as multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) and beamforming. Two bidirectional PFI lines and PXI trigger lines provide additional options for triggering and routing signals within a PXI system.
The module can be programmed using the NI-FGEN driver and is compatible with software development environments such as LabVIEW.
