Part Number 778226-01 is the identifying part number for the National Instruments PXI-8212 GPIB and Ethernet Interface. The module contains a TNT4882C ASIC compatible with the IEEE 488.2 standard. The embedded ASIC performs various functions required by the IEEE 488.2 standard like IEEE 488 Talker, Listener, and Controller. Similarly, the FIFO buffers present in the ASIC decouple GPIB transfers from PXI transfers. Furthermore, it also features a GPIB monitor port for board and bus-level diagnostics.
The 778226-01 allows a maximum data rate of 1.5 Mbytes/s using IEEE 488.1. However, when the embedded ASIC is used with NI’s high-speed GPIB protocol HS-488, the maximum data transfer rate of ANSI/IEEE 488.1-1987 reaches up to 8 Mbytes/s.
The module features an IEEE 488 Standard 24-pin I/O connector for GPIB and RJ-45 for Ethernet. The module supports Ethernet data rate modes of 10 Mb/s for 10Base-T and 100 Mb/s for 100Base-T. It is recommended that for 100Base-TX, the network cable must be Category-5, twisted pair wiring. Similarly, the module must be connected to a 100Base-TX switch if you plan to run it at a data rate of 100 Mb/s. On the other hand, it is best to use Category 3, 4, or 5 twisted-pair wiring for 10-Base T. Furthermore, the 778226-01 draws a maximum of 2A when connected to +5V, typically consuming 10W of power.
To properly configure and use the 778226-01, you need the NI-488. 2 driver software for Windows 2000/NT/Me/9x and Solaris. On the other hand, NI-488DDK can be used for operating systems other than Windows 2000/NT/Me/9x and Solaris. LabVIEW and Measurement Studio are the most popular ADEs for the module.
