Keysight E8257D PSG Microwave Analog Signal Generator
The Keysight E8257D is a premium microwave analog signal generator for precise signal synthesis over a wide frequency spectrum. It offers a frequency range of 250 kHz to 67 GHz, depending on which option is chosen (e.g., Option 513: 13 GHz, Option 567: 67 GHz), with ranges extendable above the stated limits. The instrument has a frequency resolution of 0.001 Hz in the CW mode and switching speeds as low as 7 ms (typical) for making fast frequency changes in dynamic test applications.
With great output power capability, the E8257D delivers up to +30 dBm in some configurations, supplemented by such features as 1EU (high power) and HY2 (SNR mode). Its internal step attenuator (Option 1E1) delivers precise power control to -135 dBm for use when ultra-low signal levels are required. Level accuracy is ±0.8 dB across most frequency ranges, with automatic level control (ALC) and temperature stability as low as 0.02 dB/°C.
Spectral purity is a feature of the E8257D, with low phase noise performance to -144 dBc/Hz at 10 MHz offsets and harmonic suppression to -55 dBc with optional low-pass filters. Sub-harmonic and non-harmonic spurious signals are minimized, and residual FM is as low as 6 Hz RMS. The generator delivers analog modulation (AM, FM, PM) and pulse modulation with deviations to 128 MHz (FM), modulation depths exceeding 60 dB (AM), and pulse rise times as low as 6 ns. Remote programmability over GPIB, LAN, or RS-232 interfaces makes it easy to integrate into automated test systems, and SCPI compatibility provides backward compatibility with older Keysight instruments. Front- and rear-panel connectors provide RF outputs (APC-3.5, 2.4 mm, or 1.85 mm), external modulation inputs, and synchronization ports for system-level configurations.
Well-suited for component testing, satellite communications, and radar systems, the E8257D performs best in applications that require high power fidelity and stable, low-noise signals. Its modular construction allows customizing with such options as UNX/UNY (ultra-low phase noise), UNT (modulation), and UNW (narrow pulse modulation), making it well-suited for a variety of RF and microwave applications.
