National Instruments 777243-01 VMEbus Extender
The NI 777243-01 is a 6U single slot VMEbus extender which extends the VMEbus architecture by use of MXI-2 technology; this allows the extension of VMEbus operations outside of the physical confines of the VMEbus chassis. The NI 777243-01 connects to the MXI bus through a cable connection and allows remote computers to directly control the VMEbus backplane. Shared memory communications, fast data transfer rates, and direct VMEbus control are possible when utilising an external computer while maintaining the low cost and high degree of flexibility provided by having an external computer. The NI 777243-01 can be mounted in either the leftmost slot as the VMEbus system controller or in any other slot position within a VME chassis. The register set implemented on the NI 777243-01 follows the VXIbus specifications, operates in A16 space with D16 capability, and all registers are accessible from both the VMEbus and the MXIbus.
The NI 777243-01 utilises custom ASICs to implement four address mapping windows (A32, A24, A16 & VXI configuration), providing a uniform address mapping scheme throughout the entire system. Each window can independently distribute VMEbus address spaces over multiple main frames; therefore, each device in the system has access to a single unified address map. The NI 777243-01 supports master & slave modes for A32, A24, A16, D64 (VME64), D32, D16, & D8 widths and translates MXIbus block mode transfers into VMEbus block mode transfers. In cases where a VME slave does not support block mode operation, the NI 777243-01 will automatically generate non-block mode VMEbus cycles while maintaining block mode operations on the MXI bus side.
The NI 777243-01 buses all seven VXIbus interrupt lines across the MXI-2 cable; therefore, external computers and embedded controllers can detect, assert and service interrupts across multiple mainframes without additional software. Optionally installed onboard DRAM provides additional shared memory on the VMEbus, reducing dependence upon standalone memory cards. Up to eight devices per MXI link are supported, and multiple VME-MXI-2 boards can be installed within one chassis to add additional MXI links.
