National Instruments 778580-01 Interface Card
The 778580-01 (PCI-MXI-2) from National Instruments is an interface board that mounts in a half-length PCI slot in your PC. It allows you to communicate directly with all instrumentation systems using VXI, VME, and/or MXI bus architectures. In addition to providing direct access to any instrumentation connected via the MXI bus, it also terminates the MXI bus signal locally at the back panel, so no additional hardware is required. All instrumentation connected via the MXI bus recognizes the PCI-MXI-2 board as a standard VXIbus device. It has been designed for use as the System Controller for the MXIbus (terminating local bus signals). In addition to the system controller functionality, there are two banks of memory onboard, each totaling up to 16MB. These may be configured either as separate buffers or shared between the MXIbus environment and the VXI/VME environment.
At its core, the 778580-01 is a custom application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC), called MITE. The MITE is a dual-channel Direct Memory Access (DMA) controller that contains a combination of all the interfaces necessary to connect a PCI-based PC to an instrumentation system using VXI, VME, and/or MXI bus architectures within one integrated circuit. By incorporating these interfaces in a single ASIC and implementing them as a DMA controller, each of the data transfers between the host CPU and any instruments can be performed without burdening the host CPU. The result is that the host CPU is available for performing analysis and control functions instead of being busy moving data. The board also implements the Synchronous MXI protocol and supports VME64 MBLT block transfer cycles. This enables fast, efficient eight-byte transactions to be performed over both address and data buses simultaneously to improve instrument communication.
Designed specifically for automated test and measurement/data acquisition environments, this product meets both the PCI Specification v2.0 and MXIbus Specification v2.0. Therefore, it's compatible with virtually every instrumentation platform currently being utilized today. The 778580-01 is capable of supporting D64 and Block Mode Cycles. It controls MXIbus Interrupt Levels, Utility Signals, TTL Triggers, CLK10 Timing, etc. Base address registers are also configurable for maximum flexibility in integrating this board into your existing system. This part also provides reliable MXIbus-to-PCI throughput at rates of 132 MB/sec for master operation and 33 MB/sec for slave operation, making it suitable for applications such as laboratory automation, industrial testing, and distributed instrument control.
