National Instruments 778540-08 Motion Controller Module
The NI 778540-08 (Model PXI-7350) is an eight-axis servo and stepper motion controller that can be used as part of various automation solutions such as PXI, CompactPCI, and PCI. The controller uses both a LabVIEW environment and dedicated motion VI libraries to simplify the process of writing code that controls how objects are moved from one place to another (point-to-point), how objects move in a straight line (straight line path), how objects follow a circle (circular interpolation), and how complex shapes can be created through the use of many different movement paths (contour). Because the controller has two processors, one processor is dedicated to doing all of the motion processing in real time while the other processor does all of the communication with the host PC. This allows for very fast responses to commands by the host PC while at the same time allowing for the control of DC brushed and brushless servo motors, servo valves, closed-loop piezo systems, and stepper motors in either open-loop or closed-loop configurations. These capabilities make the controller ideal for high-accuracy applications found in robotics, packaging, semiconductor handling, and industrial testing.
In addition to being able to send and receive information via the RTSI bus, each axis of the 778540-08 also has its own dedicated I/O, including end-of-travel limit switches, home switches, Hall effect sensors, and encoders. The part also has a number of breakout options available, including breakpoint outputs and trigger inputs for position capture. It has a total of 64 bits of general-purpose digital I/O and 8 analog input channels, which have a range of ±10V. These additional features allow the user to implement a variety of functions, such as joystick operation, sensor monitoring, and/or closed-loop tuning by providing additional feedback. Servo axes can be controlled using either a quadrature encoder or analog feedback using PID and PIVFF control loops. Stepper axes can be controlled in either full-step, half-step, or microstep modes to achieve higher levels of positional accuracy.
Using the RTSI bus, the 778540-08 enables synchronized motion operations with data acquisition and image acquisition devices under a single trigger and timing reference. Motion update rates for servo and stepper axes can be achieved at 62.5 µsec per two axes. Eight-axis cycle times average approximately 250 µsec. Therefore, the part offers tight synchronization and coordination between multiple axes for the most demanding multi-axis motion control applications.
