The National Instruments 780446-01 (Model PXI-8108) is an embedded controller for PXI (Peripheral eXtension Interface) and CompactPCI systems. The controller is based on a 2.53 GHz Core 2 Duo processor. Running on the Windows XP operating system for embedded systems, this part number enables deterministic real-time processing capabilities for modular instrumentation and data acquisition. As the system controller, it routes and synchronizes data (and distributes clocks) across all of the installed PXI modules. Along with its processing capabilities, the unit can be used as a controller within PXI and CompactPCI systems. In this capacity, it has control over how data is routed from one module to another (data flow) and controls how different modules are synchronized with each other and how they receive their clocks. Requiring less than one-quarter of the physical space of a standard desktop PC, the controller provides an industrial-grade single-slot chassis solution for replacing desktop PCs.
Data transfer to external hosts and devices is facilitated by two high-speed USB ports and 10/100/1000 base-TX gigabit Ethernet. Extra functionality can be added via an integrated serial port and hard drive. The onboard storage includes a shock-resistant hard drive. Legacy equipment can be connected via RS-232 serial port and general purpose I/O. The PXI trigger bus and local bus provide precise timing with various types of instruments, including digitizers, generators, and switches. This configuration provides a cable-free solution in a compact single-slot footprint that saves valuable chassis space. The Windows XP FES environment also supports Ni-Daqmx, LabVIEW, and TestStand. This enables users to create custom acquisition sequences without adding unwanted OS overhead or running unused services.
The primary application areas for the 780446-01 include industrial automation engineers who need to acquire large amounts of data at once (high channel count), engineers who need to characterize both digital and analog signals (mixed signal), and engineers who perform hardware in the loop simulations.
