National Instruments 778697-04 Arbitrary Waveform Generator
National Instruments (NI) part number 778697-04 (Model Name PXI-5421) is an Arbitrary Waveform Generator (AWG) which generates up to 16 bits of resolution at 100 MS/s sampling rates using up to 512 megabytes (MB) of on-board memory. With such large amounts of onboard memory available, users are able to generate longer, more complex, non-periodic waveforms than would be possible using smaller memory models. In addition to the use as an arbitrary waveform generator for communications testing and other types of testing such as consumer products testing, scientific research, automotive diagnostics, and military/aerospace testing. Engineers working with PXI-based test systems will appreciate its ability to store both the waveform data and the sequencing commands in one location, which allows engineers to create complex signal sequences that require more than simple sequencing.
In demanding test environments the primary value of the 778697-04 is due to its signal quality. For example, it produces a close-in spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) of 91 dBc, an average noise power spectral density of –148 dBm/Hz, and less than picoseconds of output jitter. As such, it is ideal for communications testing where accuracy and precision of frequency matter. Additionally, a built-in 43 MHz elliptical filter reduces unwanted high frequency content, along with adjustable output impedance (50 or 75 ohms), and accurate attenuation controls increase the overall versatility of the unit during measurements. There are also four different trigger options and extended link and loop features, allowing engineers to build complex test patterns. Lastly, there are numerous input synchronization ports to support coordinated operation among multiple channels or instruments.
Driver software bundled with the 778697-04 provides automation engineers working on mixed-signal test systems with additional capabilities. Drivers compatible with LabVIEW, LabWindows/CVI, Measurement Studio, Visual C++, and Visual Basic via the IVI-compliant NI-FGEN Driver simplify integration with existing test benches. A simulation mode also enables teams to develop applications prior to hardware delivery. Combined with digitizers or additional generators, this instrument can be used to create synchronized multichannel measurement systems for I/Q signal generation or phased array simulation. Therefore, the 778697-04 is an applicable choice in industrial automation laboratories, telecommunications laboratories, and research laboratories requiring highly accurate, reproducible signal generation.
