The National Instruments 784181-01 (PXIe-5413) is a high-precision 20 MHz arbitrary waveform generator designed for automated test, signal generation, and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation. Featuring a single-channel configuration (with multi-channel models available) utilizing front-panel SMA connectors for referenced single-ended outputs, the module combines 16-bit DAC resolution with 128 MB of onboard memory per channel. Built on a flexible direct digital synthesis (DDS) and arbitrary sample rate architecture, the generator generates standard sine waves from 0 MHz to 20 MHz with an ultra-fine frequency resolution of 2.84 µHz, while ramp and triangle waveforms operate across a 0 MHz to 1 MHz range for lower-frequency control system validation.
For user-defined function and arbitrary waveform generation, the PXIe-5413 supports custom waveform sequence sizes ranging from as few as 2 samples up to 64,000,000 samples (with a minimum quantum size of 1 sample). In user-defined mode, custom shapes support up to 8,192 samples per cycle with a measured step-response rise time of 14.8 ns. The selectable onboard digital reconstruction filter offers dynamic control over signal integrity: with the digital filter enabled, user sample rates span from 5.6 µS/s to 200 MS/s (bandwidth equals 0.2 times the user sample rate with a 20.3 ns rise time); with the filter disabled to bypass image rejection, user sample rates range from 3.125 MS/s to 200 MS/s with a faster 16.3 ns rise time.
Occupying a single 3U PXI Express slot, the module integrates smoothly into automated test systems, taking advantage of PXI backplane timing and synchronization capabilities. The generator supports rising-edge start triggers and flexible execution modes, including single, continuous, stepped, and burst operations. Featuring an input impedance exceeding 100 kΩ for DC trigger and reference signals, the 784181-01 provides clean, high-fidelity signal sourcing across wide output voltage spans from -12 V to +12 V.
