National Instruments 778726-01 TCXO PXI Synchronization Module
The NI 778726-01 (Model Name PXI-6652) Synchronization Module acts as a synchronization master for the modular instrumentation by controlling the timing of all of the modules. A TCXO, accurate to 1 ppm, replaces the standard 25 ppm 10 MHz backplane clock when installed into Slot #2. This stable time base permits multiple digitizers, arbitrary waveform generators, and dynamic signal analyzers to have their sampling clocks locked to a single low-jitter clock source. Thus, they do not drift apart, and there will be a precise phase relationship among them. Additionally, the 778726-01 provides synchronized triggering capabilities. It has a DDS clock source that produces an output frequency range of DC to 105 MHz at resolutions of 1 µHz. Therefore, this product can serve as a precision oversampled clock for use in conjunction with dynamic signal analyzers. The synchronization module serves as a PXI Star Trigger Controller that can drive the thirteen equal-length lines to Slots #3 through #15 with less than 1 ns of skew, thus synchronizing each acquisition. Each of the eight TTL trigger bus lines is routable; therefore, you can coordinate handshakes and event sequences among your digitizers, arbitrary waveform generators, digital I/O boards, etc., without having to wire the entire system together.
All software configuration is performed via the NI-SYNC driver. The NI-SYNC Driver provides application programming interfaces (APIs) for LabVIEW and Lab Windows/CVI so that programmers need not manipulate registers at a low level to configure the 778726-01 synchronization module. If you require additional functionality and/or performance enhancements beyond what can be achieved via the NI-SYNC driver, then you can access and utilize the onboard Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) utilizing the LabVIEW FPGA module. With this module, you can implement custom trigger logic, gating, or pulse generation.
When used in very large systems (i.e., multi-chassis systems), one 778726-01 can provide synchronization to up to three PXI-6651 slave modules. The slave modules receive both the master clock and trigger(s). With this capability, you can develop tightly coupled, high channel count measurement arrays capable of supporting phased array test environments (e.g., antenna beamforming), acoustic beamforming, and many other types of distributed, synchronous data acquisition applications.
