National Instruments 778658-01 Gigabit Ethernet Interface Module
National Instruments' 778658-01 (PXI-8232) is a single-slot PXI card that integrates both a GPIB controller and Gigabit Ethernet. The ability to integrate these two communication capabilities into one small package will be attractive to many engineers who wish to create systems where legacy GPIB-based instrumentation is integrated with current networking instrumentation. While Gigabit Ethernet has the potential for delivering 1 Gb/s of data transfer, the NI 778658-01 will deliver this at a 1000 Mb/s rate, which represents a significant increase compared to standard Fast Ethernet but maintains full backwards compatibility with 10BaseT and 100BaseTX networks. As such, the dual capability offered by this module may be particularly valuable for test & measurement systems needing to connect legacy GPIB-based instrumentation with newer networked instrumentation, thus eliminating the requirement for separate expansion cards and maximizing available chassis space for additional PXI modules.
Besides acting as a bridge between non-PXI instrumentation and a PXI chassis, 778658-01 also enables third-party GPIB devices to be integrated into an automated test environment. The NI-488.2 driver software is provided to support reliable communication between the controller and any GPIB devices attached thereto. Through this software interface, many different types of measurements, calibrations, and data acquisition operations can be performed within industrial automation and research laboratories. Since this module supports both instrument control and network communications, system integrators have the ability to greatly improve the cabling of their systems, decrease the complexity of hardware required, and make the overall design of their scalable test platform easier.
In addition to simply connecting instrumentation via GPIB and Ethernet, the Ethernet port on 778658-01 can act as an EtherCAT master when coupled with NI-Industrial Communications for EtherCAT software in LabVIEW. This feature extends the functionality beyond simply connecting instrumentation to allow synchronization of multiple distributed I/O and motion control devices with high determinism. This further expands the functional capabilities of 778658-01 from simply a connector to an active participant in automation processes. By combining GPIB Instrument Management, Gigabit Ethernet Speeds, and EtherCAT Master Functionality, the Gigabit Ethernet Interface Module establishes itself as a multi-functional base upon which flexible high-speed measurement and control systems can be built for a variety of industrial applications.
