National Instruments 777573-01 MXI-2 System Extender Circuit Board
The National Instruments 777573-01 is a 32-bit MXIbus interface PXI-8320 module based upon the 3U CompactPCI format. It is designed to plug into an available peripheral slot of a PXI or CompactPCI chassis and provide a point-to-point communications path between the host computer and the MXIbus. As the 777573-01 utilizes the identical communications register set of the VXIbus message-based instrumentation, the 777573-01 will be recognized by all other MXIbus attached devices as a VXIbus node. The 777573-01 can also act as the MXIbus System Controller, allowing the termination of MXIbus signal lines directly on the board, thus reducing the complexity of system configuration when there are requirements for centralized bus control within a particular application.
The primary component of the 777573-01 (PXI-8320) is the MITE ASIC (a dual-channel DMA controller), which integrates all the VXI, VME, MXI, and PCI interface logic onto one semiconductor device. By doing this, the 777573-01 provides a method to transfer data and commands independent of the host CPU, thereby providing increased availability of computational resources to be utilized for data processing and analysis rather than raw data movement. The PXI-8320/777573-01 also includes synchronous MXI protocol support and VME64 MBLT capabilities to facilitate rapid eight-byte block transfers across both address and data buses. In addition to its other functions, the 777573-01 can include up to 16MB of onboard DRAM, which could either be used as a local data cache or, alternatively, could be used as shared memory between both the MXIbus side and the VXI/VMEbus side.
As the 777573-01 operates, it can support D64, D32, D16, and D08 data cycle types, as well as block and R-M-W transaction types over the entire A32, A24, and A16 address space while continuously verifying MXIbus parity to check for transmission errors. The programmable address window capability on the 777573-01 PXI-8320 allows incoming PCI cycles to be routed to either local registers, onboard memory, or the MXIbus depending upon what is most appropriate at any given time. Therefore, the 777573-01 is an ideal solution for extending existing bus connections in a wide variety of test & measurement applications.
