About NI PCI DAQ Cards

NI PCI DAQ cards turn a compatible desktop or industrial computer into a measurement and control system. Installed in conventional PCI expansion slots, these National Instruments boards acquire electrical signals, generate outputs, monitor digital states, and measure timing events, depending on the model. They are useful for maintaining established production testers, laboratory equipment, and research systems where existing software and wiring make a complete platform redesign unnecessary.

The range includes several distinct families. E Series models such as the PCI-6024E and PCI-6036E provide multifunction acquisition for established applications. The PCI-6024E, available under part number 777743-01, combines 16 analog inputs, 12-bit resolution, a maximum sampling rate of 200 kS/s, two analog outputs, and eight digital I/O lines. M Series options include the PCI-6221, PCI-6251, and PCI-6281, covering different priorities for measurement speed, resolution, and functionality.

For example, the 68-pin PCI-6221 provides 16 single-ended or eight differential analog inputs with 16-bit resolution and a 250 kS/s aggregate maximum rate. It also includes two analog outputs, 24 digital I/O lines, and two 32-bit counters. Because its analog inputs are multiplexed, available conversion throughput is shared across active channels. A headline sampling rate should therefore never be interpreted automatically as the rate available on every input.

S Series cards address applications that need simultaneous sampling. The PCI-6143, part number 778913-01, offers eight 16-bit analog inputs operating at up to 250 kS/s per channel. The PCI-6115, offered under part numbers 778534-01 and 778554-01, provides four 12-bit inputs at up to 10 MS/s per channel. These architectures support measurements where timing relationships between channels matter, including transient capture and synchronized stimulus-response testing.

Successful selection also depends on the complete signal path. Confirm input range, required accuracy, sensor conditioning, triggering, and connector compatibility rather than comparing channel counts alone. Thermocouples, strain gauges, and other sensors may require external amplification, excitation, filtering, or compensation. Cables and terminal blocks must match the exact board variant; the PCI-6221, for instance, exists in both 37-pin and 68-pin versions.

Software and computer compatibility deserve equal attention. Many PCI DAQ cards use NI-DAQmx, but supported operating systems and development environments depend on the device and driver release. Conventional PCI cards cannot plug directly into PCI Express slots. Check slot compatibility and physical clearance before ordering, particularly for full-length boards such as the PCI-6115.

Document channel assignments, voltage limits, and trigger routing before replacing a board, then validate the repaired system against known signals and established acceptance criteria.

For replacement planning, provide Apex Waves with the model, part number, connector type, software versions, and calibration requirements. This information helps define the replacement requirement before hardware changes reach the test bench.

Key Features

  • E Series: Maintain multifunction systems built around PCI-6024E and PCI-6036E cards.
  • M Series: Compare PCI-6221, PCI-6251, and PCI-6281 capabilities against application requirements.
  • S Series: Use PCI-6143 or PCI-6115 when simultaneous acquisition is required.
  • Sampling: Distinguish aggregate conversion rates from rates specified per channel.
  • Integration: Verify PCI slots, connector variants, cabling, and signal conditioning.
  • Lifecycle planning: Preserve software compatibility and specify testing and calibration needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Conventional PCI and PCI Express use different connectors and interfaces, so a PCI DAQ card cannot be installed directly in a PCIe slot. Confirm that the computer has a compatible PCI slot, the correct signaling support, and sufficient board clearance. A similarly numbered PCIe model is not automatically a drop-in replacement.

E Series includes established multifunction boards such as the PCI-6024E and PCI-6036E. M Series includes models such as the PCI-6221, PCI-6251, and PCI-6281, with different speed, resolution, and I/O capabilities. E Series and M Series use multiplexed analog acquisition, while S Series models such as the PCI-6143 and PCI-6115 provide simultaneous sampling. Compare individual specifications rather than assuming every model within a family is equivalent.

Not necessarily. On the PCI-6221, 250 kS/s is the aggregate maximum analog conversion rate shared across active channels. Ten equally sampled channels therefore have a theoretical ceiling of 25 kS/s per channel, with settling and application requirements potentially reducing the practical rate. By contrast, the simultaneous-sampling PCI-6143 specifies up to 250 kS/s per channel.

Do not assume a general-purpose voltage input includes everything a sensor requires. Thermocouple measurements need cold-junction compensation and suitable low-level measurement performance. Strain-gauge measurements require bridge excitation and may need bridge completion and amplification. Select compatible signal-conditioning hardware and observe input and common-mode voltage limits; a connector or terminal block alone does not guarantee sensor compatibility.

Many models use NI-DAQmx, with NI Measurement & Automation Explorer used for configuration and supported device tests on Windows. Verify the exact card, operating system, operating-system bitness, development environment, and driver release as a complete combination. Older applications may depend on Traditional NI-DAQ, so preserve the existing software configuration until any migration has been evaluated. Installing the newest driver is not automatically the correct choice.

Record the model, ordering part number, connector variant, cable and terminal-block models, channel assignments, and software versions. Check input ranges, sampling architecture, output requirements, trigger routing, and computer clearance. The PCI-6221 has both 37-pin and 68-pin variants, while the PCI-6115 requires full-length PCI clearance. Give Apex Waves these details and specify the required functional testing, calibration, and documentation before requesting a replacement.
