About NI FPGA Hardware

NI FPGA hardware gives engineers direct control over measurement timing, signal processing, and input/output behavior through a field-programmable gate array. Instead of executing every operation through a host processor, an FPGA implements application-specific logic in hardware and can run independent tasks in parallel. This architecture supports deterministic control, custom triggering, protocol communication, and rapid responses to incoming signals. For aerospace, defense, industrial automation, and research applications, it provides flexibility beyond the predefined functions of conventional data acquisition devices.

The NI R Series family combines reconfigurable logic with analog or digital I/O for computer-based and PXI test systems. Representative models include the PXI-7831R, PXI-7854R, and PCIe-7852R. The PCIe-7852R, part number 781103-01, uses a Virtex-5 LX50 FPGA and provides eight analog inputs, eight analog outputs, and 96 bidirectional digital lines. Its dedicated analog-to-digital converter on each input supports independently controlled timing and triggering. Engineers can implement specialized measurement sequences, sensor simulation, and hardware-in-the-loop interfaces.

NI FlexRIO targets customizable instrumentation and demanding signal processing. The PXIe-7975R, part number 782955-01, combines a Kintex-7 410T FPGA with 2 GB of onboard DRAM. Compatible FlexRIO adapter modules provide the analog or digital front end, allowing the FPGA module and adapter to function as a reconfigurable instrument. Supported peer-to-peer streaming can move data between compatible modules without routing it through the host processor.

CompactRIO and Single-Board RIO bring programmable FPGA resources into embedded systems. The eight-slot cRIO-9045, part number 785623-01, combines a real-time processor, a Kintex-7 70T FPGA, and support for compatible C Series modules. The sbRIO-9627 integrates processing, a Zynq-7020 FPGA, and onboard I/O on one circuit board. Its 783817-01 development configuration and 783817-02 OEM configuration address different integration needs.

Programmable FPGA hardware also supports flexible division of work: hardware logic handles time-critical operations while the host or real-time processor manages logging, networking, and user interfaces. On supported CompactRIO controllers, NI-DAQmx or Scan Mode can simplify standard measurements, while FPGA mode enables custom processing and direct control of compatible modules.

Custom FPGA development typically uses LabVIEW with the LabVIEW FPGA Module, the appropriate hardware driver, and compatible compilation tools. Embedded applications may also require LabVIEW Real-Time. Software versions, operating systems, target support, and compilation requirements must be checked together, especially when maintaining older equipment. FPGA clock speed alone does not establish measurement throughput; converter rates, interface bandwidth, buffering, and application logic also matter.

When selecting replacement hardware, compare the complete model and part number, FPGA resources, I/O requirements, connector pinouts, chassis compatibility, and existing software dependencies. Retain project source files and deployment records to simplify validation. Apex Waves helps customers source NI hardware for established test systems, replacement requirements, and continued operation of legacy equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

NI FPGA hardware is used for applications that need custom timing, parallel processing, or fast responses directly at the I/O. Common examples include hardware-in-the-loop testing, sensor simulation, custom digital protocols, signal filtering, and closed-loop control. The FPGA executes the programmed hardware logic, while a connected host or embedded processor can handle logging, networking, and the user interface.

R Series devices combine a programmable FPGA with integrated analog or digital I/O for computer-based and PXI systems. FlexRIO emphasizes customizable instrumentation and FPGA processing, with adapter-based models such as the PXIe-7975R using compatible front-end modules. CompactRIO combines embedded processing, FPGA resources, and modular C Series I/O. Single-Board RIO integrates processing, FPGA resources, and I/O on a circuit board for embedded designs.

Developing custom logic generally requires a compatible LabVIEW development system, the LabVIEW FPGA Module, the hardware-specific driver, and the appropriate FPGA compilation tools. LabVIEW Real-Time is also needed when developing LabVIEW applications for supported real-time processors. Check the selected device against the exact software release and operating system; installing the newest versions does not guarantee support for older FPGA targets.

Yes, compatible C Series modules can provide I/O for FPGA applications on supported CompactRIO controllers or RIO chassis. The custom logic runs on the controller or chassis FPGA, which accesses the module's channels. Confirm support for the exact module, controller, driver, and programming mode. A C Series module is not a standalone replacement for a programmable FPGA controller.

Compare the required I/O types, channel counts, voltage levels, converter speeds, timing capabilities, and connectors. Also review FPGA logic resources, digital signal processing resources, memory, host-interface bandwidth, chassis compatibility, and software support. A larger FPGA offers more implementation capacity, but it does not automatically increase analog sampling speed or make existing code compatible with another hardware target.

Not automatically. A replacement must meet the system's electrical, mechanical, timing, and software requirements. Changing models can require FPGA source-code changes, recompilation, different cables, or updates to the host application. For established systems, record the full model and part number, retain project files and deployment details, and validate the replacement before returning the system to service.
