About NI Modules & Cards

NI modules and cards provide the measurement, switching, and control functions inside automated test systems. National Instruments hardware spans PCI and PCI Express computer cards, PXI and PXI Express chassis modules, and compact C Series I/O modules. Although these products are often grouped together, their connections, software requirements, and measurement capabilities differ. Identifying the platform is the first step toward selecting an expansion device or finding a suitable replacement.

Multifunction data acquisition cards combine several tasks on one board. Examples include the M Series PCI-6221 and X Series PCIe-6351. The PCIe-6351, part number 781048-01, provides 16 analog inputs, two analog outputs, 24 digital I/O lines, and four counters/timers. This combination supports voltage monitoring, signal generation, encoder measurements, and automated testing. PCI and PCI Express cards require different computer expansion slots; a similar model number does not establish interchangeability.

PXI and PXIe modules bring instrument functions into a shared chassis. The PXI-4070 supplies digital multimeter measurements, while the PXIe-5162 captures fast waveforms as an oscilloscope. For switching applications, the PXI-2569, part number 778572-69, provides 100 independent single-pole, single-throw relays. Chassis-based systems let engineers combine instruments with shared timing and triggering resources. Compatibility remains slot-specific: PXI Express hybrid slots support hybrid-compatible PXI modules, but PXIe modules cannot operate in conventional PXI peripheral slots.

C Series modules connect sensor signals to compatible CompactDAQ and CompactRIO systems. The NI-9213, including part number 785185-01, provides 16 thermocouple inputs with cold-junction compensation. The four-channel NI-9234 supports sound and vibration measurements, including compatible IEPE sensors. Selecting the appropriate module can provide the signal conditioning required for a particular measurement rather than relying solely on a general-purpose voltage input. Chassis support and available programming modes must be checked for each module.

For applications requiring customized hardware behavior, R Series devices such as the PCIe-7841R incorporate a programmable FPGA. These devices support application-specific acquisition and control logic rather than only predefined measurement operations.

Selection should also account for input ranges, isolation, sampling architecture, connector pinouts, terminal blocks, and cable compatibility. Software matters just as much: multifunction DAQ commonly uses NI-DAQmx, while instrument and FPGA products require their corresponding drivers and development tools. Confirm hardware, operating system, and application software compatibility before changing an established configuration.

Before replacing discontinued equipment, record the installed hardware revision, driver version, and accessories. A newer device may provide similar specifications while changing timing behavior, supported functions, or connector assignments. Verify the replacement against the complete test application before returning the system to normal service.

Apex Waves helps customers source legacy NI modules and cards, locate technical documentation, and evaluate repair or calibration options. Matching the exact model and part number helps preserve existing wiring, software, and test procedures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Both terms describe hardware that adds measurement, communication, switching, or control functions. Card commonly refers to PCI or PCI Express boards installed in a computer, while module often refers to PXI, PXIe, or C Series hardware installed in a chassis. The terms overlap; the specified form factor and interface determine compatibility.

Sometimes. A PXI module can use a compatible PXI peripheral slot in a PXI Express chassis, or a hybrid slot when the module is explicitly hybrid-compatible. Dedicated PXI Express slots do not accept conventional PXI modules. Check both manuals rather than assuming that every slot in a chassis supports the same hardware.

Many C Series modules support both platforms, but compatibility is not universal. Confirm the exact module and chassis or controller combination in NI's compatibility documentation, then check the required driver version and supported programming mode. Moving a module between CompactDAQ and CompactRIO may also require application changes.

M Series, X Series, and CompactDAQ acquisition generally use NI-DAQmx. Instrument drivers include NI-DMM for digital multimeters, NI-SCOPE for oscilloscopes, and NI-SWITCH for supported switches. R Series FPGA hardware uses NI R Series Multifunction RIO; developing FPGA logic also requires appropriate development software. Select versions compatible with the hardware, operating system, and application.

Record the complete model name, NI ordering part number, and hardware revision when available. Confirm the bus interface, channel configuration, connector pinout, timing requirements, and software support. For example, part number 781048-01 identifies the PCIe-6351. Do not assume a circuit-board assembly number is equivalent to the ordering part number, or that a newer model is a direct replacement.

Yes. Apex Waves specializes in legacy NI hardware and offers sourcing, repair, and calibration options. Replacement inventory, repair feasibility, and calibration services depend on the model and condition. Provide the full model and part number, application requirements, and any faults. Confirm the available service scope and required calibration documentation when requesting a quote.
