The NI PXI-8221 is a two slot PC Card Carrier in a single-slot PXI module, giving the user more alternatives for growing PXI and CompactPCI frameworks. The user can utilize the PXI-8221 to include any usefulness at present accessible in PCMCIA modules. The NI PXI-8221 accepts CardBus modules. The PXI-8221 PC Card connectors can control two completely independent PC Card sockets. They acknowledge either two type I or type II PC Cards or one type III PC Card. The two modules handle 16-bit PCMCIA PC Cards and the PXI-8221 additionally handles 32-bit CardBus PC Cards that can work at the full speed of the PCI bus (132 Mbytes/s). The NI PXI-8221 can also deal with the mixed operation of PCMCIA and CardBus PC Cards.

The National Instruments PXI-8221 PC Card connectors execute a unique component of the PXI and CompactPCI detail called Serialized IRQ for dealing with PCMCIA PC Cards. Serialized IRQ actualizes standard ISA interrupt requests in a PCI-based framework, such as PXI or CompactPCI.
