About NI PCIe DAQ Cards

NI PCIe DAQ cards turn a compatible desktop or industrial computer into a measurement and control platform. These National Instruments data acquisition boards install directly into PCI Express expansion slots and connect to external signals through dedicated cables and terminal accessories. Depending on the model, one card can acquire analog voltages, generate analog outputs, monitor digital states, and measure pulses without requiring a separate modular instrumentation chassis.

The portfolio includes M Series boards such as the PCIe-6251 and PCIe-6259, alongside X Series models including the PCIe-6321, PCIe-6351, and PCIe-6363. M Series hardware is relevant when maintaining established test systems. X Series introduces NI-STC3 timing and synchronization technology, independent analog and digital timing engines, and four 32-bit counters for functions such as encoder measurements, frequency measurement, and pulse generation.

Sampling architecture matters as much as the advertised speed. For example, the PCIe-6351 provides 16 single-ended or eight differential analog inputs with 16-bit resolution. Its maximum rate is 1.25 MS/s for one channel, but multichannel acquisition is limited to 1.00 MS/s aggregate. That throughput is shared across active channels. Applications requiring measurements at the same instant can instead consider simultaneous-sampling hardware such as the eight-channel PCIe-6376.

These capabilities support component characterization, production testing, laboratory automation, and equipment monitoring. Analog outputs can supply test waveforms or command signals, while digital lines handle logic-level interfaces. Counter resources support event counting and pulse-based measurements. Select the board around the actual signal range, channel count, timing requirements, and output loading rather than assuming every PCIe DAQ card offers identical functionality.

NI-DAQmx provides the driver framework for configuring acquisition and generation tasks in supported development environments, including LabVIEW. NI Measurement & Automation Explorer helps identify installed devices and run test panels before application development. Check hardware, operating system, driver, and development software compatibility together, especially when replacing a card in an older computer.

Physical integration also deserves attention. PCIe cards cannot plug directly into conventional PCI slots, and PCIe boards are not interchangeable with PXIe chassis modules. Verify available slot space, connector pinouts, cable compatibility, and terminal block requirements. Thermocouples, strain gauges, and other sensors may require additional signal conditioning, excitation, or isolation rather than direct connection to general-purpose voltage inputs. For replacement projects, record existing wiring assignments and task settings so the new installation can be checked against the original configuration.

Apex Waves helps customers source NI PCIe DAQ cards for replacements, system expansion, and continued support of established test equipment. Provide the model and ordering part number when requesting a quote, and discuss condition, calibration requirements, and accessories before selecting a replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

PCI and PCI Express use different expansion interfaces and physical connectors. A PCIe DAQ card cannot install directly into a conventional PCI slot. Check the computer's available PCIe slot, board clearance, and motherboard requirements. PCIe cards also differ physically from PXIe modules, which install in compatible instrumentation chassis.

M Series includes PCIe models such as the PCIe-6251 and PCIe-6259. X Series examples include the PCIe-6321, PCIe-6351, and PCIe-6363, with NI-STC3 timing technology, independent analog and digital timing engines, and four 32-bit counters. Compare individual specifications and pinouts before treating an X Series card as a replacement.

Not necessarily. Multiplexed cards share conversion throughput across active channels. The PCIe-6351 supports up to 1.25 MS/s on one channel and 1.00 MS/s aggregate during multichannel acquisition, not 1.25 MS/s on every input. Simultaneous-sampling cards such as the PCIe-6376 acquire channels together and specify performance per channel.

The M Series and X Series cards discussed here use NI-DAQmx. Select a driver release that supports the exact card, operating system, and development environment. LabVIEW can configure and run DAQmx tasks, while NI Measurement & Automation Explorer provides device configuration and test functions on supported Windows installations.

Connections are model-specific. For the PCIe-6363, NI lists the SHC68-68-EPM cable and SCB-68A terminal block among compatible accessories. Check the connector, pinout, and signals being used. Sensor measurements may additionally require excitation, amplification, cold-junction compensation, or isolation; a connection accessory does not automatically provide every conditioning function.

Provide Apex Waves with the model, ordering part number, existing cable and terminal block models, operating system, and NI-DAQmx version. Include required channel counts, signal ranges, sampling rates, and calibration documentation. Confirm condition and availability, and validate wiring and software compatibility before substituting a different model.
