About NI PXIe Chassis

NI PXIe chassis provide the powered enclosure and PCI Express backplane that connect modular instruments into a coordinated test system. Rather than measuring signals themselves, these chassis distribute power, remove heat, route data, and supply shared timing resources. They support applications ranging from electronics validation and automated production testing to aerospace research, where digitizers, signal generators, switching modules, and other instruments must operate together.

Across the PXIe-107x, PXIe-108x, and PXIe-109x model ranges, chassis selection starts with usable instrument space. The advertised slot count does not necessarily equal the number of measurement modules that can be installed. A system controller occupies a dedicated position, while wider instruments can occupy several positions. The PXIe-1092 also includes a power-only peripheral expansion slot, which cannot operate as an independent data-connected instrument slot.

Slot compatibility is equally important when retaining existing hardware. PXI Express peripheral slots accept PXIe modules, while hybrid slots also accommodate hybrid-compatible PXI modules. This does not make every conventional PXI card compatible with every PXIe chassis. Check each module's connectors and documented slot requirements, especially when combining older switching or measurement hardware with newer instruments. A system timing slot supports compatible timing modules or a PXIe peripheral module.

Backplane bandwidth determines how much data the chassis can move, but system bandwidth and individual slot bandwidth are different specifications. For example, the PXIe-1082 supports up to 8 GB/s system bandwidth, while the PXIe-1092 and PXIe-1095 support up to 24 GB/s. Actual throughput also depends on the controller, module interfaces, shared links, and software. Reference clocks and trigger routing help coordinate acquisitions; optional timing configurations can add improved clock accuracy and external synchronization connections.

Most models use a separate embedded or remote controller. However, the PXIe-1073 and PXIe-1083 integrate remote-control interfaces and do not accept an embedded controller. Verify the host interface and cable requirements rather than assuming that any available controller can be safely transferred between chassis.

Power and cooling should be evaluated against the complete installed configuration. NI chassis offer different cooling classes, including 38 W, 58 W, and 82 W per slot. Higher-power modules may require a particular chassis and cooling profile, and allowable ambient temperature can change with the cooling requirement. Maintain specified ventilation clearances and use appropriate filler panels. Confirm controller compatibility, PXI Platform Services support, operating system requirements, and instrument drivers before migrating an established system.

For replacement projects, provide Apex Waves with the chassis model, full ordering number, controller, installed modules, and required timing options. This information helps distinguish a matching replacement from a chassis that requires configuration changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A conventional PXI chassis uses a shared PCI bus, whereas a PXIe chassis adds PCI Express links for higher-bandwidth communication. Both provide power, cooling, and synchronization resources, but their controller and module connections differ. A PXIe controller cannot be installed in a conventional PXI chassis, and a PXI controller cannot be installed in a PXIe chassis.

Many can, but the module must be hybrid-slot compatible and installed in a suitable hybrid slot. The PXIe-1082 provides four hybrid slots, while the PXIe-1092 provides seven. A dedicated PXIe peripheral slot does not accept a conventional PXI module. Check the module manual, connector arrangement, and driver support before reusing older hardware.

No. The PXIe-1092 has one system-controller slot, seven hybrid slots, one PXIe system timing slot, and one power-only peripheral expansion slot. The timing slot can accept a compatible PXIe peripheral module, giving eight data-connected instrument positions. Slot 10 supplies additional power and space for multi-slot instruments rather than a separate PXI Express data connection.

No. Chassis with a system-controller slot can use a compatible embedded controller or remote-control module. The PXIe-1073 instead has integrated MXI-Express control, and the PXIe-1083 has integrated Thunderbolt 3 control. These models connect to an external computer and have no slot for an embedded controller. Confirm host, cable, and software compatibility for the selected remote interface.

No. For the PXIe-1092 and PXIe-1095, NI specifies an ambient range of 0 to 40 °C when any module requires more than 58 W of slot cooling, compared with 0 to 55 °C when all modules require 58 W or less. Also check the installed power-supply configuration: the PXIe-1095 requires both supplies to support 82 W in every slot.

Match the full ordering number, slot arrangement, controller interface, module widths, bandwidth, cooling, and timing options. For example, PXIe-1095 part number 783882-01 is the standard configuration, while 785971-01 adds the Timing and Synchronization option. Confirm software compatibility, included accessories, condition, and testing documentation, and provide Apex Waves with the existing system configuration when requesting a replacement.
