About NI PXI Oscilloscopes

NI PXI oscilloscopes bring waveform acquisition into modular, computer-controlled test systems. Instead of using a separate benchtop instrument for every measurement, engineers install oscilloscope modules in a compatible PXI or PXI Express chassis and control them through software. This approach supports automated electronics testing, transient capture, signal characterization, and synchronized measurements. For aerospace, defense, industrial, and research applications, modular oscilloscopes can combine with waveform generators, switches, and digital instruments within one platform.

The NI 51xx oscilloscope portfolio includes models with different balances of bandwidth, sampling speed, resolution, and channel density. The two-channel PXI-5114 provides 125 MHz bandwidth, 250 MS/s sampling, and 8-bit resolution. Its ordering numbers include 779466-01, 779466-02, and 779466-03. The PXI-5122 offers two channels, 100 MHz bandwidth, 100 MS/s sampling, and 14-bit resolution, with part numbers 778756-01 through 778756-04. The two-channel PXI-5124 combines 150 MHz bandwidth, 200 MS/s sampling, and 12-bit resolution; its part numbers are 778757-01 through 778757-04.

PXI Express models extend the selection for faster signals or larger channel counts. The PXIe-5162 offers 1.5 GHz bandwidth, 10-bit resolution, and sampling up to 5 GS/s, with the achievable rate depending on the enabled channels. The PXIe-5171, part number 783692-01, provides eight simultaneously sampled channels, 14-bit resolution, and sampling up to 250 MS/s. Its programmable Kintex-7 FPGA supports customized triggering and onboard signal processing. These capabilities are model-specific rather than standard across every NI oscilloscope.

Selecting an instrument requires more than comparing maximum sample rates. Analog bandwidth determines the frequency response of the input path, while resolution influences how finely voltage changes are represented. Input noise, voltage range, coupling, impedance, probe characteristics, and record length also affect measurement quality. Onboard memory determines how much waveform data can be retained, and sustained streaming depends on the entire system, including the chassis, controller, and storage. Compare specifications at the intended settings, since published maxima may not be available simultaneously across every enabled channel, voltage range, coupling configuration, or acquisition mode.

NI-SCOPE provides the programming interface for acquisition, triggering, and waveform measurements. Supported development environments include LabVIEW and C-based applications. Compatible instruments can use PXI timing resources and NI-TClk for coordinated acquisition, but synchronization requirements vary by model. Before upgrading or replacing hardware, verify the supported driver version, operating system, development software, and chassis slot type. A PXI Express module is not a direct fit for a conventional PXI-only chassis.

For legacy system maintenance, provide Apex Waves with the complete model and part number, required memory, chassis information, and software versions. Confirm available replacement, repair, and calibration options before ordering. Matching the original configuration helps reduce integration surprises and keeps procurement focused on the requirements of the existing test system.

Key Features

  • Modular acquisition combines oscilloscope measurements with other PXI instruments in a shared test platform.
  • Legacy examples include PXI-5114, PXI-5122, and PXI-5124, with different speed and resolution tradeoffs.
  • PXIe-5162 and PXIe-5171 address high-speed and multichannel acquisition requirements, respectively.
  • NI-SCOPE and supported synchronization features help automate repeatable waveform measurements.
  • Verify complete part numbers, memory, input characteristics, software support, and chassis compatibility before purchasing.

Frequently Asked Questions

NI PXI oscilloscopes digitize electrical waveforms for measurements such as amplitude, frequency, pulse width, and rise time. They support automated testing, transient capture, and signal analysis. Unlike standalone benchtop oscilloscopes, these modules operate within a compatible chassis and require an embedded controller or a suitable connection to a host computer.

The PXI-5114 provides 8-bit resolution, 250 MS/s sampling, and 125 MHz bandwidth. The PXI-5122 provides 14-bit resolution, 100 MS/s sampling, and 100 MHz bandwidth. The PXI-5124 provides 12-bit resolution, 200 MS/s sampling, and 150 MHz bandwidth. All three have two input channels. Choose according to signal bandwidth, timing detail, noise, and amplitude measurement requirements.

A hybrid-compatible PXI oscilloscope can operate in a compatible hybrid slot in a PXI Express chassis. Some chassis also provide dedicated legacy PXI slots. A PXI module does not fit a PXI Express-only peripheral slot, and a PXI Express oscilloscope cannot be installed in a conventional PXI-only chassis. Check the module and chassis documentation.

NI-SCOPE is the instrument driver used to configure acquisitions, triggers, and waveform measurements. It supports programming through environments such as LabVIEW and C-based applications. Interactive operation is available through supported front-panel software. Confirm that the chosen NI-SCOPE release supports the exact oscilloscope, operating system, and development environment, especially when maintaining a legacy installation.

Different ordering numbers can identify different memory capacities or other hardware options. For the PXI-5122, 778756-01 has 8 MB per channel, 778756-02 has 32 MB per channel, 778756-03 has 256 MB per channel, and 778756-04 has 512 MB per channel. Match the full part number and required configuration rather than relying on the model name alone.

Yes. Supported models can share timing and trigger resources through the PXI backplane, while NI-TClk coordinates supported instruments for aligned acquisitions. This enables channel expansion and measurements correlated with waveform generators or other instruments. Supported device combinations, sample rates, synchronization accuracy, and any external timing hardware requirements must be checked for the specific system.
