About NI PXI Systems

NI PXI systems bring multiple measurement and control functions into one modular platform for automated test. PXI stands for PCI eXtensions for Instrumentation. Rather than operating separate benchtop instruments, engineers combine a chassis, controller, and selected modules under software control. This approach suits aerospace and defense test stations, electronics validation, manufacturing inspection, and laboratory research where synchronized measurements and repeatable procedures matter.

The chassis provides mechanical support, power, cooling, and communication between components. Examples include the eight-slot PXI-1042, available under part number 778636-01, and the PXIe-1082, available under part number 780321-01. The PXIe-1082 has one controller slot, four hybrid peripheral slots, two dedicated PXI Express peripheral slots, and one PXI Express system timing slot. Slot counts must therefore be interpreted carefully: an eight-slot chassis does not provide eight ordinary instrument positions.

An embedded controller runs the application inside the chassis. The PXI-8108 serves conventional PXI systems, while the PXIe-8840 serves PXI Express systems. Alternatively, compatible MXI-Express remote control hardware connects a chassis to an external computer. Controller selection should account for processing needs, operating system support, storage, and the chassis interface. PXI and PXIe controllers are not interchangeable.

Measurement modules determine the system's capabilities. NI M Series devices such as the PXI-6251 and X Series devices such as the PXIe-6363 combine analog input, analog output, digital I/O, and counters. Dedicated instruments include the PXI-4070, a 6½-digit digital multimeter, and the PXI-5122, a two-channel, 14-bit oscilloscope with 100 MHz bandwidth and 100 MS/s sampling. Other module categories provide switching, waveform generation, RF measurements, and programmable power.

Traditional PXI uses a shared PCI bus, while PXI Express uses PCI Express links for higher data throughput. Both platforms offer backplane timing and triggering to coordinate supported instruments. Hybrid slots can accommodate PXIe modules or hybrid-compatible PXI modules, but not every legacy PXI module fits every PXIe chassis. Confirm compatibility using the exact chassis, slot, and module documentation. A shared reference clock and configured trigger routes help align acquisitions across modules; simply installing instruments together does not automatically synchronize them. Budget for signal conditioning, terminal blocks, cabling, and calibration documentation alongside the main hardware during initial planning.

Software completes the system. NI Measurement & Automation Explorer helps identify and configure supported hardware. Drivers such as NI-DAQmx, NI-DMM, and NI-SCOPE serve different instrument families, while LabVIEW and TestStand support application development and automated test execution. Check driver, operating system, and application compatibility before changing an established installation.

Apex Waves helps organizations maintain NI PXI systems through replacement hardware, repair services, and calibration options. Matching existing part numbers, connection accessories, and software requirements can help preserve validated test configurations instead of forcing an unnecessary redesign.

Frequently Asked Questions

A complete system needs a chassis, an embedded controller or compatible remote control connection to a host computer, and modules selected for the measurements. It also needs suitable drivers and application software. Depending on the signals, include terminal blocks, cables, probes, and signal conditioning. Confirm power, cooling, and slot compatibility across the configuration.

Conventional PXI uses the PCI bus, while PXI Express, commonly abbreviated PXIe, uses PCI Express links to support higher data throughput. Both provide timing and triggering resources for automated measurements. PXIe also adds differential clock and trigger resources. Actual performance depends on the chassis, controller, modules, and data-transfer path rather than the platform name alone.

Some can. A PXIe chassis may provide conventional PXI peripheral slots, hybrid slots, or both. Hybrid slots accept PXIe modules and specifically hybrid-compatible PXI modules, not every older PXI card. Check each module's connector and documented compatibility. PXIe modules cannot operate in conventional PXI peripheral slots, and PXI and PXIe embedded controllers require matching chassis interfaces.

The required software depends on the installed hardware and operating system. PXI Platform Services supports chassis identification and trigger routing. NI-DAQmx serves supported data acquisition modules, NI-DMM serves supported digital multimeters, and NI-SCOPE serves supported oscilloscopes. NI MAX helps configure supported devices; LabVIEW or other supported languages can control them, while TestStand organizes automated test sequences. Verify version compatibility before installation.

Start with module types and quantities, then check usable peripheral slots, controller compatibility, bandwidth, total power, per-slot cooling, and synchronization needs. Include space for future expansion and any modules wider than one slot. For example, the eight-slot PXIe-1082 reserves one slot for its controller, leaving seven positions consisting of four hybrid, two dedicated PXIe, and one system timing slot.

Apex Waves offers replacement NI PXI hardware, repair services, and calibration options for legacy test systems. Provide the exact model and part number, controller configuration, operating system, driver versions, and required accessories when requesting assistance. Matching these details helps evaluate replacements against the existing setup. Hardware availability and service options should be confirmed for each item.
